George Heller was appointed Senior Director of Hudson’s Bay Company (Hbc) in March 2006 following his retirement as President and Chief Executive Officer, a position he had held since February 1999. A retail veteran, George has held senior positions in Canadian and international retailing for almost 30 years. The majority of these years were spent working with Hbc, starting with the Northern Stores Division in 1966 and moving from there to positions with the Bay, Simpsons, Zellers and Woodwards.
George was President and CEO of the Victoria Commonwealth Games from 1991 to 1994. In 1995, he became President of Bata Industries in North America and Europe, before taking the position of President and CEO of Kmart Canada in 1997.
George rejoined Hbc when he was appointed President and CEO of Zellers following Hbc’s acquisition of Kmart Canada in February 1998.
George was awarded the “Meritorious Service Medal” and Citation in January 1997 by the Government of Canada in recognition of his leadership of the 1994 Commonwealth Games and his service to Canada. He also holds Honorary Doctorates from the University of Victoria and Ryerson University. He was inducted into the Canadian Retail Hall of Fame in 2005.
