Canadian Overseas Schools: A Unique Approach to the Export of Canadian Education

Author(s): Lia Cosco

 in Canada-Asia Agenda   (7 pages)

Abstract:

The demand for Canadian education is rising, most visibly in Asia. An important and growing, yet relatively unexplored, dimension of Canada’s overseas education engagement is its offshore and international schools. Canada’s provincial accreditation of overseas schools is one of the most innovative international initiatives in education. However, a lack of sufficient oversight and support for the accreditation and operation of Canadian overseas schools puts Canada’s international education standards at risk.

I like the article by Lia. It is well balanced and well researched. All in all it shows very favourably (which it is) the picture of overseas schools. I am somewhat disappointed however, by the Abstract which indicates that “a lack of sufficient oversight and support for the accreditation and operation of Canadian overseas schools puts Canada’s international education standards at risk” (?). I have re-read the report and cannot glean that opinion at all. One “possible” reason to conclude this may be from a line in the report that states, “There is concern about the inconsistency of inspectors and in turn inspection processes”, but there is no apparent reference to where this “concern” may be coming from. Seeing as education is a provincial initiative and the inspections would be done by the provinces or boards, if there was a concern, it would seem that this would be an easy fix for those who do the inspections, the provincial or board authorities. Again, a great article by Lia but the abstract is a bit misleading and in my opinion, does not accurately reflect the content of the article.I like the article by Lia.
