Abstract:

The Great Eastern Japan Earthquake that hit Japan on March 11 was the greatest natural disaster in Japan’s recorded history. This review covers the estimates of damage and destruction of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, and focuses on the immediate emergency and rescue response compared to other recent earthquake in Japan, and then points to what can be learned from these events for the forthcoming earthquake in the Cascadia region of Canada.

Very good and informative piece by a very knowledgeable scholar. Dr. Edgington makes reference to something that is becoming an interesting (and relatively recent) development - militaries - both domestic and foreign - playing a greater role in disaster relief. Dr Edgington’s analysis using historical data and info from the earthquakes in Kobe and Niigata was particularly interesting to read. His advice on “prevention” at the end is most valid given this experience with Japan.
