Abstract
When the regime of Indonesia President Suharto fell apart a decade ago, it was feared that it was only a matter of time before the whole country imploded. However, far from collapsing, Indonesia has emerged as a functioning democratic state and, to the discomfort of some of its neighbours, as a proponent of spreading democratic institutions throughout its region.
