More Asia Does Not Mean Less North America

Abstract
While many Canadians recognize that Asia is an important component of today’s global economy and a powerful influence on Canada, they have yet to adjust to the situation. The rise of Asia does not mean Canada must choose between closer ties with the US or with Asia to ensure its future. However, Asia must become part of Canadians’ mental maps in a way that it has not yet done. Yuen Pau Woo raises a critical point which ought to be self evident: more Asia does not mean less North America or Europe. Sadly, this point is not self-evident and requires constant repetition. Hopefully the mantra will eventually take hold as older mantras of a North-American centric universe diminish in utility.
