About Us

Vision

The Canadians Abroad Project consists of a policy research consortium initiated by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada with the support of The Royal Bank of Canada Foundation, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Western Economic Diversification Canada, the Government of British Columbia and the Walter & Duncan Gordon Foundation. This three year (2008-2010) joint research project analyzes the causes and consequences of the Canadian citizens by birth or naturalization living abroad.

Goals

To gain a better understanding of, and share knowledge about:

  • the number, country of residence and characteristics of Canadians living abroad;
  • the factors underlying the creation of the overseas Canadian community;
  • the economic, fiscal and political implications of the growing number of Canadians abroad; and
  • Canada’s possible policy responses.

Targeted Audience

This project is targeted at stakeholders in government, business and academic communities, who are interested in Canadians abroad for professional and personal reasons.

Research Activities

Policy-oriented research is the core of the project, including:

  • in-house research conducted by APF Canada;
  • joint research efforts with partner organizations;
  • commissioned research conducted by independent researchers.

Dissemination

Dissemination of information is the key to the project. In order to deliver our research findings to a wide audience, various methods will be employed, including:

  • workshops, roundtables and conferences;
  • publications; and
  • creation of a special project website.
