This may well be Myanmar’s “Doi Moi” or a prelude to it, I agree with Nelson Rand, let us hope the Canadian government is quick grasp the reality of recent historical changes in Vietnam (1986 Doi Moi - Renovation) and the Soviet Union under Gorbechev’s Perestroika. Clearly given the statements being made by influential reform figures from the middle east, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, etc. now is the time for all western democracies to step up their presence, offer clear possibilities to the regime in Myanmar, if they continue on the reform track. Pres. Thien Sien could well come out of this looking like a paramount figure in Myanmars history as the person/leader that not only united the country through political reform and market reform by working with the west saved the country from continued isolation. We need to hear the regime coin their Doi Moi like phrase. I have that phrase in Burmese … I want to hear it from others.
