Toyota to Build RAV4 Electric Vehicles at Ontario Production Facility
Toyota of Japan and Tesla Motors Inc. of Palo Alto, California, confirmed that their jointly-developed RAV4 electric vehicle will be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc.’s facility in Woodstock, Ontario beginning in 2012. It will be the first facility in North America to build a Toyota electric vehicle. Toyota will pay Tesla approximately C$100 million to supply the electric powertrain, which includes the battery, motor, gear box and power electronics for the RAV4. Tesla will build the electric powertrains at its production facility in Palo Alto and then ship them to the Woodstock facility for final assembly into the vehicle.
