The Dragon Returns: Canada in China's Quest for Energy Security

Author: Wenran Jiang

Wenran Jiang, Senior Fellow with the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and Mactaggart Research Chair at the University of Alberta, writes on China’s global quest for energy and resources. This report, written for the CIC Canada-China Relations Project and supported by APF Canada, examines the growing ‘global footprint’ that China’s energy companies are leaving as they ramp up foreign investments in the energy sector and form large, competitive multinational corporations. Jiang examines the correlation between Canada’s relationship with China and bilateral energy relations in recent years. He notes that ‘in order to effectively engage China, Canada should develop a long-term China strategy in general and in the energy and resource sectors in particular.’
