Abstract:
This report provides a framework for understanding the nascent Canada-Asia energy relationship and provides ideas on how the relationship could be advanced. It outlines the case for making a broad-based Canada-Asia energy relationship a national priority and calls for leadership to develop a strategic framework to enhance energy relations with Asia. This task force was created jointly by APF Canada and the Canada West Foundation and established as part of the National Conversation on Asia.

The report provides a useful outlook, but tends to understate the contribution nuclear energy will make to Canada’s energy industry in the long run. For example an article* published in Energy Bridge Magazine indicates how nuclear energy can contribute to oil sands development. In short, the use of nuclear energy to produce synthetic crude from oil sands would increase the total amount of Canadian oil and natural gas available for other purposes and export. Additional development of nuclear technology might also benefit from alignment of energy research interests between Canada and Asian countries.
