APF Canada Congratulates Council of the Federation’s Efforts to Build Stronger Ties with Asia

Vancouver, BC – July 22, 2011 – The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada today congratulated the Council of the Federation for announcing its intent to ‘intensify efforts in Asia by better promoting Canada and the provinces and territories and realizing economic opportunities for all Canadians.’ The Foundation also welcomed the planned joint Council of the Federation mission to Asia with the federal government in the next twelve months.

“We are pleased to see the united commitment shown by the provinces and territories to act on the rise of Asia by placing the region at the top of their economic agenda,” said Mr. Yuen Pau Woo, President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He added, “It is clear more Canadians are beginning to recognize the growing impact and importance of Asia to Canada. We are committed to working together with all provinces and territories and the federal government to help develop a robust, strategic and long-term engagement strategy through our recently launched policy development and educational outreach initiative called the National Conversation on Asia.”

In April 2011, the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada launched the National Conversation on Asia (NCA) to respond to growing unease expressed by Canadians about the rise of Asia and Canada’s relations with the region. This pan-Canadian initiative is a call to action, supported by the private sector and non-governmental organizations across the country, aimed at helping Canadians develop a fuller appreciation of the rise of Asia and its implications for Canada. Programs and activities of this pan-Canadian initiative include:

- An online hub of Canada-Asia issues bringing together established experts and next-generation voices
- Distinguished Lectures on Asia in cities across the country
- Futures Group on Asia – a panel of Canada-Asia experts
- Opinion and comment in print and online media
- Policy research, commentary and analysis
- Roundtables, conferences and panel discussions
- Outreach with Canada’s emerging leaders on Asia
- Active online conversation and engagement through social media.
