APF Canada Applauds Release of Complementarities Study between Canada and China
Yuen Pau Woo, President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, said: “The Complementarities Study underscores the importance of bilateral trade and investment for both Canada and China, and the need to deepen this relationship through a comprehensive economic agreement. Canada should seize this opportunity and aim for a deal that covers not only trade in goods and services, but also two-way investment and people movements.”
According to the Foundation’s latest Points of View Asia Pacific opinion poll results, 47% of Canadians with professional and business ties to Asia placed China as the top priority FTA partner. Moreover, a full 66% stated that a Canada-China FTA would increase their level of business activity conducted in China.
“Canadians understand the economic importance of China and support a Free Trade Agreement with the People’s Republic, but they have concerns about the competitive threat of Chinese enterprises,” added Mr. Woo. “By entering into free trade talks with Beijing, Ottawa will have an opportunity to more fully engage Canadians on the benefits of trade diversification and closer economic integration with China, while developing a legal framework to help structure and safeguard our economic relations.”
