An independent
think-tank on Canada's relations with Asia
25@25 entry: Self-Identity
Matthew Tsang shares his story as a Canadian of Asian origin living in Vancouver. With his parents coming to Vancouver from Hong Kong, he, his sister and cousin tell of the dangers of forgetting their roots as 2nd generation immigrants. They speak of their own struggle to maintain the Asian side of their identity, through their familiarity with their parent’s mother tongues, and even their knowledge about traditional food.
