Canada Announces Details of Assistance for Afghanistan
Susan Whelan, Minister for International Cooperation, said that Canada “will continue to offer humanitarian aid to Afghanistan while also helping to build peace, repatriate displaced persons and refugees, destroy landmines, promote gender equality and protect children.” The initiatives announced this week total $30.2 million, the first phase of the $100 million that was pledged on behalf of Canada at the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan reconstruction earlier this year. The initiatives will be implemented by partners such as the Red Cross, UN agencies (UNICEF, World Food Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), CARE Canada and Rights and Democracy.
