China, India Among Important Music Markets for Canadian Songwriters: Report

A comprehensive new report by the Toronto-based Canadian Music Publishers Association ahead of Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly's Creative Industries Trade Mission to China from April 9-to-13 shows that two-thirds of industry revenues now come from foreign sources, a complete reversal in just a decade. Export Ready, Export Critical: Music Publishing in Canada, found that sales outside Canada have become a major driver of sector growth, resulting in more than C$120 million in revenue increase among Canadian Music Publisher Association members since 2005. The report notes that while the United States and Europe remain priority markets because of size, language, cultural affinities and strong copyright regimes, China and India are important emerging markets.
