Foreign Minister Starts Limited Strategic Engagement with Burma

Foreign Minister Baird said that Canada has undertaken limited strategic engagement with Burma, focused entirely on the issue of human rights. The renewed dialogue involves the exchange of the two countries’ ambassadors, but Minister Baird added that Canada has no intention to do away with economic sanctions that had been imposed after the Burmese government’s crackdown on protests in 2007.
