Minister Cannon to Represent Canada at Special UN General Assembly Session on Pakistan Floods
Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that Canada will participate in the United Nations General Assembly’s Special Session on Pakistan Floods, to be held at UN headquarters in New York City today. Pakistan continues to experience its worst floods in decades, with more than 1,500 deaths and close to 16 million people affected. In response, Canada has committed up to $33 million in humanitarian assistance and equipment to the people of Pakistan. The Government of Pakistan requested the special session to discuss the floods and to bring the resulting crisis to the attention of the international community. Pakistan will be represented by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will also attend.
