Statement by Minister Cannon on Security Council Meeting on Sinking of South Korean Vessel

Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued the following statement regarding the United Nations Security Council dialogue held on the sinking of the South Korean naval vessel Cheonan: “Canada remains committed to a coordinated international response, including through the UN Security Council, to ensure that the North Korean regime faces consequences for its aggressive actions. We will continue to work closely with South Korea and our partners to ensure that a coordinated international approach is taken toward the current situation on the Korean Peninsula. Canada will also continue to use its G-8 presidency to sustain international attention on North Korea. The Government of Canada has signaled it will take steps to impose enhanced restrictions on trade, investment and other bilateral relations with North Korea, including the addition of North Korea to the Area Control List. We will also move to suspend high-level exchanges between Canada and North Korea.” On March 26, 2010, the Cheonan sank in waters near the boundary between South and North Korean waters, claiming the lives of 46 sailors.
