Education in Canada-Asia Relations
Published: December 03, 2012 in Points of View Asia Pacific (33 pages)
Abstract:
In this survey, Canadians engaged in Asia were asked to examine different dimensions of Canada-Asia relations when it comes to education, and the role it might play in helping Canada build closer relations with Asian countries. According to the results, 8-in-10 practitioners consider education to be the most critical component of any strategy to build closer relations with Asian countries. However, Canadians’ ‘Asia competency’ has been found lacking with 60% of Asia practitioners noting the difficulty of finding qualified Canadians with sufficient Asia knowledge to help their companies succeed in Asia. This survey was sponsored by Cathay Pacific Airways.

Congratulations on an excellent report. However, I was surprised that there is no reference in the report to the important population of Asian Canadians, who represent at least 10 per cent of Canada’s population, and who could be very helpful in strengthening Canada’s Asia-competency. I have more detailed comments in my blog article: http://www.asiancenturyinstitute.com/international/156-canada-s-asia-competency-deficit.
