Global Economy

Canada has benefited tremendously from the natural resources boom and growing Asian demand. Canadian firms in other sectors have also been able to expand and tap into growing Asian markets. Simultaneously, off-shoring and growing competition for manufacturing and service jobs has made it difficult for some sectors to remain viable in Canada. Investment from Asia has raised challenging questions about the implications of foreign ownership. It is also becoming increasingly difficult to separate profit from other concerns, such as the environment, workers’ rights and the ethics of doing business in countries with different standards and practices, such as widespread corruption. Interconnectivity between Canada and Asia is evident in the growing volumes of mobile, educated workers moving between our regions. Proactively engaging Asia requires that we understand Canada-Asia linkages in the global economy.
