Dr. McArthur earned a bachelor of commerce degree in forestry from the University of British Columbia in 1957. At Harvard, he completed an MBA in 1959 and earned a doctorate there in business administration in 1963. In 2013 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

While McArthur’s contributions to government, business, and academia are too numerous to list, his outstanding service and dedication to APF Canada prompted the establishment of the John H. McArthur Distinguished Fellowship. An avid proponent of collaborative communities, during his tenure as Chair McArthur reached out to business, government and academia to solidify the Foundation’s position as a thought leader and agent of action in Canada’s evolving relations with Asia.

“As an academic and a policy advisor to governments, companies and associations spanning the globe, John is well known and highly regarded,” said APF Canada President and CEO Stewart Beck. “But what fewer people are aware of is John’s generous spirit and his selfless dedication to Canada’s next generation of leaders in the private and public sectors. John not only provides wise counsel to senior staff at the Foundation, he is a mentor to our researchers and project leads. This Fellowship honours John, but it also reflects the valuable work he has done for us as Chair of the Foundation’s Board for the past 9 years.”

Supported by the creation of a $2-million fund, the John H. McArthur Distinguished Fellowship is awarded to an accomplished international thought leader from business or academia who will conduct policy-focused research and contribute to the work of the Foundation.
