Proportion of Total Population of Major Asian Ethnic Groups by Selected Metropolitan Areas

As a proportion of total metropolitan area population, Canadians of Asian origins are making the largest impact in Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary. In the 2016 Census, over 36% of Vancouver-area residents indicated an Asian ethnicity; for Toronto, over 30% of their population belong to an Asian ethnic group. Compared to the 2011 census, the proportion of Asian Canadians decreased in all cities mentioned except for Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Halifax. Of notable interest, is the proportion of Chinese-Canadians residing in Vancouver - this group alone accounted for over 17% of the city’s total population.

3. Data is based on a sample of approximately 25% of Canadian households due to Statistics Canada reinstating the mandatory long-form census for 2016. All other households received a short-form questionnaire. For the 2011 National National Household Survey, it was based on a 30% sample.
