Japan

As of April 9, Japan has reported 4,667 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 94 deaths. Before April, the number of COVID-19 cases had remained relatively stable, but cases surged in major cities in recent weeks. Japan has so far opted for a less aggressive approach: while the government declared a state of emergency in seven prefectures on April 7, it has not imposed a nation-wide lockdown. The government has also urged citizensto avoid closed and crowded spaces, but these recommendations do not carry legal penalties for violators.
