Japan

As of December 9, 2020, Japan has reported 165,840 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,420 deaths. Before April, the number of COVID-19 cases had remained relatively stable, but cases surged in major cities in recent weeks. Japan has so far opted for a less aggressive approach: while the government declared a state of emergency in seven prefectures on April 7, it has not imposed a nation-wide lockdown. The government has also urged citizens to avoid closed and crowded spaces, but these recommendations do not carry legal penalties for violators.
