Through our programs, we provide timely, relevant, and high-quality information, analysis, and insights on the issues driving and defining Canada’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific, as well as opportunities for direct exchange of ideas, perspectives, and policy recommendations — both within Canada and between Canada and the Indo-Pacific.
Programs
Strategic Dialogues & Roundtables
We facilitate dialogues among leaders from government, business, and academia on pressing policy issues. These dialogues deepen trust, foster partnerships, and help develop innovative solutions to shared challenges. Recent dialogues include: the Canada-Philippines Track 1.5 dialogue (December 2024, Ottawa), South Korea (December 2024, Ottawa and Seoul), India (February 2025, New Delhi), and the Canada-Taiwan Dialogue (February 2025, Taipei).
Indo-Pacific Fellowship Program
This program provides fellowships to experts from the Indo-Pacific, fostering in-depth research on key issues impacting Canada and the Indo-Pacific region. The program builds bridges between scholars, enhances understanding, and informs policy discussions.
APF Canada’s Indo-Pacific Research Fellows (IPRF) program provides fellowships to researchers from the Indo-Pacific, fostering in-depth research on key issues impacting Canada and the Indo-Pacific region. Through this program, APF Canada provides funding, editorial support, and a structured engagement plan that connects the Fellows' expertise to Canadian policy needs and, reciprocally, injects Canadian perspectives into regional debates.
APF Canada’s Indo-Pacific Visiting Scholars program supports eminent thought leaders from Asia to travel to Canada to share their insights and expertise on the Indo-Pacific region’s security, technological, and economic challenges and opportunities.
This program, supported by the Government of Canada, injects authoritative Asian perspectives directly into Canada’s public discourse and policy process while simultaneously exposing influential regional voices from the Indo-Pacific to Canadian priorities and capabilities.
APF Canada’s Indo-Pacific Media Fellows program aims to boost Canada’s visibility in the region by supporting Asia-based journalists to travel to Canada to produce and publish written or broadcast pieces on topics related to maritime security, emerging technology (AI, innovation, and emerging and clean tech), economic and energy security (supply chain management, critical minerals, and energy transitions), or another area demonstrably relevant to Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.
Indo-Pacific Young Leaders Program
We select 12-15 early-career professionals (aged 25-40) from various Indo-Pacific jurisdictions for this program, which introduces them to Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and connects them with relevant experts and organizations across the country.
Education
Our educational initiatives expand Canadians’ understanding of the Indo-Pacific region through resources, curricula, and occasional events.
APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership
This project addresses key challenges faced by micro, small, and medium enterprises and aspiring entrepreneurs from APEC developing economies, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Emerging Issues
Through this program stream, we explore emerging topics, including Arctic security, space policy, artificial intelligence, and others, and assess their impact on Canada and the Indo-Pacific.
Grants
Our grants support research and informed discussion around Canada-Asia relations.
The John H. McArthur Research Fellowship, established by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) in 2021, honours the legacy of the late Dr. John H. McArthur — a distinguished Canadian, former Chair of APF Canada’s Board of Directors, and Dean Emeritus of Harvard Business School. Since its launch, the Fellowship has supported mid-career scholars conducting original, policy-relevant research to deepen Canada’s understanding of the Indo-Pacific region.
APF Canada is committed to fostering the next generation of Asia Pacific researchers and analysts. To this end, it offers several Research Scholarships annually to students or recent grads to join our Research team for six months to a year. Successful applicants will have a background in Asia-related research in Asian studies, political science, economics, history, business, international relations, or related humanities or social science program.
The Media Fellowship program offers up-and-coming and established journalists the opportunity to spend time in Asia researching and preparing stories. The program aims to help Canadian journalists become better informed about this dynamic part of the world in order to write and broadcast insightfully on Asia and the Canada-Asia relationship.
