Jonathan T. Fried Appointed New Chair of Canadian National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation

The Canadian National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (CANCPEC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jonathan T. Fried to succeed Donald W. Campbell as Chair of CANCPEC, effective June 1, 2025. Mr. Campbell has served as Chair of CANCPEC since 2011 and was concurrently International Co-Chair of PECC from 2012 to 2020. Hugh Stephens will continue to serve as CANCPEC Vice-Chair.

Mr. Fried’s distinguished diplomatic career for Canada spanned law, economics, and trade, as set out in his biography.  His broad experience encompasses extensive involvement in Pacific economic matters, including in the G7 and G20, as Ambassador to Japan and to the WTO, Canada’s Chief Negotiator for China’s accession to the WTO, a key member of the APEC Vision Group that set the basis for the Putrajaya Vision 2040, and as Executive Advisor to Global Affairs Canada on the development of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.  He was awarded by the Emperor of Japan the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, in November 2022, and is a Distinguished Fellow with the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.

CANCPEC expresses its thanks to Mr. Campbell, currently Senior Strategy Advisor, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada, and former Canadian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister for International Trade and Ambassador to Japan, for his years of dedicated leadership of CANCPEC and for his work in guiding PECC as International Co-Chair through three successive terms.

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada serves as the secretariat for Canada’s National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (CANCPEC). CANCPEC is one of 25 member committees in the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), a non-profit international organization committed to the promotion of co-operation and dialogue to promote economic development in the Asia Pacific.
