
Rachel McCormick
Rachel McCormick has been the Director General of International Affairs for the Strategic Policy and Innovation Sector of Natural Resources Canada since August 2022. In this role, she leads the advancement of Canada’s energy and natural resource interests in bilateral relationships, negotiations at international fora such as the G7, G20, and United Nations, and is Canada’s Governor to the International Energy Agency. Dr. McCormick has played a key role in Canada’s diplomatic engagements pertaining to energy, environment and climate throughout her career.
From 2019 to 2022, she was Canada’s Consul General for the South-Central United States, and led the Energy and Environment Section at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., from 2014 to 2019. Rachel joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 2004 and held leadership roles in divisions responsible for sustainable development, energy, climate change and circumpolar affairs.
She represented the Government of Canada in a range of international forums, including the Arctic Council, the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation and the United Nations. Previously, she held positions within the Canadian energy sector and at the World Trade Organization in Geneva. She has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics for Land Use and Environmental Studies from the University of Saskatchewan and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of Calgary, where her research focused on environmental considerations in international trade and foreign direct investment in the energy sector.
