Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi co-chaired the AI Action Summit in Paris, France, earlier this week alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, with Modi declaring that India would be “happy” to host the next major AI summit.
Modi then jetted off to Washington, D.C., for a two-day visit with U.S. President Donald Trump. Modi and Trump will likely discuss further technology collaboration, tariffs and trade, New Delhi's concerns over some of Trump’s immigration policies, and each country’s potential role in ending the yearslong Russia-Ukraine war.
Ottawa, New Delhi remain at odds
Canada-India diplomatic relations continue to rumble along, following Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s bombshell allegations in September 2023 that Indian agents were involved in the killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C.
Trade relations have emerged relatively unscathed: in December 2024, Canada-India trade in goods totalled C$964 million, a five per cent decrease compared to December 2023. Bilateral services trade in the third quarter of 2024, however, reached C$4.85 billion compared to C$4.58 billion in the same quarter in 2023.
Trudeau also attended the AI summit in Paris. There were no formal meetings planned between Modi and Trudeau.
