As geopolitical tensions rise and economic protectionism deepens, securing critical minerals has become a global imperative for Canada and its Indo-Pacific partners. As a major producer with vast reserves, Canada has the potential to be a major player in global critical minerals supply chains, not least because of its willingness to approach the issue plurilaterally, the strength of its mining industry, its strong regulatory standards, and its readiness to engage in important debates about climate change, environmental protection, and Indigenous leadership and participation. Yet there is no leading critical minerals policy centre in Canada that can convene, inform, and challenge policymakers, researchers, the media, industry, and other stakeholders about the country’s critical minerals strategies, specifically where it concerns geostrategic debates, the importance of the Indo-Pacific region, and China's dominant role in global supply chains.Established in September 2025 with the support of the University of Ottawa and Canadian and international thought leaders, the Canada-Indo-Pacific Critical Minerals Hub aims to:Serve as a convening space to engage stakeholders nationally and internationally, with a focus on the Indo-Pacific region and spanning industry, civil society, and government to inform Canada's critical minerals strategy. Advance policy recommendations on partnership opportunities and co-ordination between Canada, Indo-Pacific economies, and international partners across the critical minerals value chain. Deliver timely analysis of critical minerals-related developments in Canada, the Indo-Pacific, and beyond to support informed decision-making among Canadian stakeholders. For information on the Hub, please email Project Co-ordinator Karen Hui at karen.hui@asiapacific.ca
