Government of Canada Announces Timothy Dattels as New ABAC Canada Member

VANCOUVER, BC – September 24, 2021 – The Government of Canada has appointed Timothy D. Dattels, a Partner with global investment firm TPG, and Chair of TPG Asia, to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council (ABAC).

In his work with TPG, Mr. Dattels has been based in San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Prior to joining TPG in 2004, he served as a Partner and Managing Director of Goldman, Sachs & Co. He serves or has served on the Boards of Directors of Cushman & Wakefield, BlackBerry, Invest in Canada, Parkway Holdings, Primedia Inc., Shangri-La Asia Ltd., Sing Tao News Corporation Ltd., and SFJazz. Mr. Dattels is also Vice Chairman of The Jackson Laboratory, the Founding Trustee of the Kingfisher Foundation, and Chairman of Alpine Canada, the national governing body for para-alpine, ski cross, and alpine high-performance racing in Canada.

While at Goldman Sachs, Mr. Dattels advised many of Asia’s leading corporate entrepreneurs and government entities through the Asian Financial Crisis and the evolution of regional capital markets. He has also served as a pan-Asian private equity investor and leader during his tenure with TPG Capital and is a member of the Asia Business Leaders Advisory Council comprising business leaders from Canada and 10 Asia Pacific economies. Mr. Dattels received a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of Western Ontario.

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada serves as the secretariat for Canada's APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) members, providing research, analysis, and administrative support. This private-sector body presents recommendations to APEC Leaders in an annual dialogue and advises APEC officials on business sector priorities and concerns.

As Canada’s new ABAC Canada Member, Mr. Dattels will serve a three-year term (2021-2024). He joins ABAC Canada Members Mr. Joseph Fung (2021-2024), Managing Partner, Saltagen Ventures, and Ms. Jan De Silva (2019-2022), President and CEO of the Toronto Region Board of Trade and former CEO of Sun Life Financial’s Hong Kong and Mainland China businesses.
