Emily S. Chen
Emily Chen is a postdoctoral researcher and incoming project assistant at the Institute for Future Initiatives, University of Tokyo. Her research examines how democratic states translate commitments to democracy and human rights into foreign policy under geopolitical and economic constraints in the Indo-Pacific. Focusing on Japanese diplomacy, alliance politics, and U.S.–Taiwan–China relations, she analyzes how values-based cooperation is formed and sustained in contested regional and global settings. She has held research positions at Brookings, CSIS, and the Stimson Center, and research fellowships at Pacific Forum, the Hoover Institution, and the Center for the National Interest. She holds a PhD from the University of Tokyo, a master’s degree from Stanford University, and a bachelor’s degree from National Chengchi University.
