Naoki Kokawa, the Special Advisor for the International Department at the Japanese Red Cross Society will discuss the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (GEJET) and how a nation can prepare for the unimaginable.
The GEJET has generated an enormous amount of study, debate and valuable lessons that are worth sharing globally. Kokawa’s presentation will explore how Japan–despite being one of the most prepared nations in the world–tragically lost 18,000 lives from the earthquake and tsunami. Kokawa will outline a few case studies that could provide some answers.
Discussions will also highlight some of the challenges high-income countries face in asking for and receiving international assistance.
