En 2022, le Canada et l’ANASE ont élevé leur relation au rang de partenariat stratégique et sont actuellement engagés dans la négociation d’un accord de libre-échange Canada–ANASE. Alors que le Canada cherche à diversifier ses partenariats au-delà des États-Unis et à renforcer ses liens avec l’Indo-Pacifique, l’ANASE — qui regroupe 670 millions de personnes — occupe une place centrale dans la stratégie économique et les intérêts à long terme du Canada.

Cette discussion opportune explorera comment le Canada pourrait mieux s’aligner sur les priorités de la Malaisie (présidente de l’ANASE en 2025) et des Philippines (présidente en 2026), et de quelle façon ces priorités pourraient servir à faire avancer le partenariat stratégique et les négociations de l’accord de libre-échange.

L’urgence est d’autant plus évidente en mer de Chine méridionale, où les tensions liées à la souveraineté, à la sécurité maritime et à la liberté de circulation sont en train de refaçonner l’ordre régional. 

Les Philippines, situées en première ligne de ces développements, ne sont pas seulement un acteur clé dans cette région contestée, mais aussi l’un des partenaires les plus estimés du Canada en Asie. Renforcer les liens avec Manille offre au Canada des occasions d’avancer ses plans de coopération économique et d’engagement en matière de sécurité en Indo-Pacifique. 

L’événement mettra en vedette M. Richard Heydarian, conseiller en politiques, maître de conférences au Asian Center de l’Université des Philippines et chercheur invité du programme des chercheurs invités de la région Indo-Pacifique de la FAP Canada pour l’année 2025, pour une discussion approfondie sur ce que cela signifie pour la collaboration bilatérale future entre les Philippines et le Canada.

At the March 2025 G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Canada led adoption of the G7 Maritime Security Declaration on co-operation on protecting sea lines of communication and critical subsea infrastructure. Translating those commitments into practical collaboration now requires allies and like-minded partners to share intelligence, regulatory best practices, and public-private response frameworks. Lithuania and Taiwan have emerged as frontline innovators in cable-route diversification, rapid-repair capacity, and legal attribution for grey-zone attacks. 

This closed-door dialogue will bring together perspectives from these and other critical stakeholders to identify tangible next steps for collective action and resilience. The discussion will feature, H.E. Egidijus Meilūnas, Ambassador of Lithuania to Canada, H.E. Harry Tseng, TECO Representative in Canada; Karina Häuslmeier, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Republic of Germany to Canada; and Ty Curran, Deputy Director General, International Security, Department of National Defence. The discussion will be moderated by APF Canada's Vice-President, Research & Strategy, Vina Nadjibulla.

Cet événement mettra en vedette Richard Heydarian, conseiller politique philippin reconnu et chercheur invité pour la région Indo-Pacifique à la FAP Canada. Richard Heydarian, chercheur invité en études indo-pacifiques à la Fondation Asie-Pacifique du Canada (APF Canada), prononcera des conférences à Winnipeg (9 septembre), Ottawa (12 septembre) et Vancouver (15 septembre), portant sur les développements politiques et sécuritaires récents aux Philippines ainsi que sur les perspectives de rapprochement avec le Canada.

M. Heydarian est chroniqueur international, conseiller en politiques publiques et professeur titulaire au Asian Center de l’Université des Philippines. Il collabore notamment comme chroniqueur au Philippine Daily Inquirer, animateur à la chaîne OneNews/TV5, et publie régulièrement dans de grands médias mondiaux tels que le New York Times, le Washington Post, The Guardian, Foreign Affairs, ainsi qu’Al Jazeera English, Nikkei Asian Review, South China Morning Post et Straits Times. Parmi ses ouvrages récents : The Rise of Duterte: A Populist Revolt against Elite Democracy (2017) et The Indo-Pacific: Trump, China, and the New Global Struggle for Mastery (2019).  

A winner and nominee of several international documentary awards, Invisible Nation sheds a light on the Taiwanese who have fought to safeguard their autonomy and democratic way of life, despite enduring decades of external threats and military harassment. 

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Angel Liu, Director General, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office; Vina Nadjibulla, Vice-President Research & Strategy, Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada; Professor Yves Tiberghien, UBC Professor of Political Science and Visiting Professor, Taipei School of Economic and Political Science and APF Canada Distinguished Fellow; and Vanessa Hope, Director of Invisible Nation.

The collapse of trust in global trade — driven by the resurgence of protectionism and the weakening of rules-based institutions — has reshaped the global economic landscape. As Mary Ng writes, when trust erodes, trade is no longer a reliable engine of prosperity but a tool of power and unpredictability. Countries like Canada, long champions of open markets and stable rules, have responded by deepening diversification and forging strong alliances, especially in the Indo-Pacific.

 Join us for a public lecture, co-organized with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, featuring guest speaker The Honourable Mary Ng, Former Canadian Minister of International Trade and Member of Parliament for Markham-Thornhill, and chaired by Dr Denis Hew, Senior Research Fellow, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. 

This event will explore the how Asian businesses can leverage Canada’s stable economic trading framework to co-invest in energy transition technologies, green and digital infrastructure, and supply chain stability.

Organized against the backdrop of Canada’s newly-elected federal government and positive signals from India, this closed-door dialogue is designed to renew momentum in bilateral engagement by fostering thoughtful exchange across the diplomatic, policy, and business domains.

This gathering will bring together a curated group of senior stakeholders to examine shared strategic priorities and advance practical avenues of co-operation in the India-Canada economic corridor. 

APF Canada's Vice President, Research and Strategy, Vina Nadjibulla, will join the panel along with distinguished experts including Ambassador Ajay Bisaria (former High Commissioner of India to Canada) and Ambassador Nadir Patel (former High Commissioner of Canada to India), as well as special guests Marie-Louise Hannan, Director General - South Asia, Global Affairs Canada, and Chinmoy Naik, Acting High Commissioner of India to Canada.

Co-organized by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and Global Affairs Canada, this dialogue will bring together academics, business leaders, civil society, and policy experts to examine the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade (ACAFTA) negotiation process and broaden understanding of the Agreement’s potential benefits and shared vision for deeper Canada-ASEAN economic co-operation.

The 1st Canada–Republic of Korea Track 1.5 Dialogue on Advanced Technology: Artificial Intelligence will be held on July 9, 2025 in Seoul, South Korea, organized by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, the Science and Technology Policy Institute of Korea, and the Embassy of Canada to the Republic of Korea.

This free, virtual, one-hour partner event is happening on June 25.

Organized by the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade and Invest Vancouver, this invitation-only roundtable will explore the diversification of foreign direct investment (FDI) source markets and the critical role this plays in enhancing the economic resilience of our region.

Kenan Foundation Asia, an APF Canada partner in the APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership, is hosting a networking event for MSME entrepreneurs on June 24th, from 13:00-17:00 Bangkok time. 

The event will provide an opportunity for networking among entrepreneurs and external stakeholders and will celebrate the transition to the next country level activities: a mentorship program for women entrepreneurs.

The Arctic Development Expo welcomes industry innovators, researchers, Indigenous leaders, circumpolar governments, scientists, community representatives, and passionate individuals to join us in person for this three-day event June 17-19, 2025. 

The Arctic Development Expo takes place annually 200 km north of the Arctic Circle in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada, as we strive to make knowledgeable decisions, enhance circumpolar life, and create innovative solutions for our northern realities.

Bien qu’elle ne soit pas membre du G7, l’Inde a participé à chaque sommet depuis 2019.

La FAP Canada accueille les 15 membres de la première cohorte de jeunes leaders indo-pacifiques pour une visite d’une semaine au Canada. Ce programme vise à leur permettre de rencontrer des acteurs clés des relations Canada-Indo-Pacifique issus des gouvernements, des groupes de réflexion, des organismes de la société civile et du milieu des affaires.

La cohorte de cette année est composée de cadres gouvernementaux, de chercheurs et de professionnels du secteur privé provenant du Bangladesh, de l’Inde, de l’Indonésie, du Japon, de la Malaisie, de la Mongolie, des Philippines et de Taïwan.

In September 2023, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Paul Thoppil as Canada’s first ever Indo-Pacific Trade Representative, based in Jakarta, Indonesia. This new position, an outcome of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy (launched in November 2022) is focused on deepening Canada’s trade and investment links in the Indo-Pacific region. Since arriving in the region, Mr. Thoppil has travelled extensively, often alongside Canadian companies and provincial representatives, meeting government and corporate leaders to boost Canadian exports and attract foreign investment.

The incoming federal government’s pledge to review Canada’s foreign policy offers a timely opportunity to take stock of the Indo-Pacific Strategy as Canada looks to accelerate trade diversification and recalibrate and deepen relations with this important region.

Vina Nadjibulla, Vice-President Research & Strategy, Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, will share some "Strategic Reflections" drawing from contributions from experts on the implementation of the Strategy and its impact, highlighting successes and priorities to ensure it remains effective in advancing Canadian interests in the region.
