APF Canada, Nimbyx Partner on Philippines Connect Scholarship Program

VANCOUVER, BC – APRIL 9, 2019 – The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is pleased to announce the Philippines Connect program, which was launched today in partnership with Vancouver-based international health-care technology company Nimbyx.

The Philippines Connect program is one in a series of country-specific programs that are part of APF Canada’s larger Asia Connect program. Through this latest partnership, APF Canada and Nimbyx are providing C$8,000 per student to support undergraduate students in completing a four-month summer work term at Nimbyx’s office in Bonifacio Global City in Metro Manila, the Philippines.

The first student selected to participate in the Philippines Connect program is Marijo Arias of Ottawa, Ontario. Arias is a third-year student at the University of Waterloo, where she is majoring in environmental engineering. She has previous internship experience in Canada in health-care and information technology.

“We want to give Canadian students the opportunity to gain a competitive advantage by working in one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies and in an environment where other industry giants such as Google, Facebook, and Uber are also present,” said Paolo Kalaw, CEO of Nimbyx. “Philippines Connect allows them to learn skills and cultural awareness by challenging themselves within the fast-paced progressive environment that is the Philippines tech community.”

“The Philippines has a young and dynamic economy, and to capitalize on the remarkable growth happening there, young Canadians need to have experience on the ground,” said APF Canada President and CEO, Stewart Beck. “They need the Asia-related skills and knowledge to help them better understand how to operate and succeed in the economies of tomorrow.”

“I am excited for the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in my courses at Waterloo and in my previous internship experiences in an international setting,” said Marijo Arias, Philippines Connect’s first participant. “I am especially excited to witness and experience firsthand the global tech industry in the Philippines. I expect this experience will position me well to be competitive in the more globalized workforce that will await me when I graduate.”
